Safety and Structural Integrity

Our ambulances are designed with specific features to protect crews involved in accidents

Energy-Absorbing Corners Take The Hit For The Entire Body - All Road Rescue vehicles are built to survive a severe accident. We utilize .125 all-aluminum 'Box Pan Formed' construction. In an accident, this type of construction more efficiently absorbs the energy. We pay special attention to seams, joints, corner radius and single-panel sidewalls. We incorporate interior safety beams and cross bracing to insure the energy generated in an accident is absorbed by the structure of the vehicle, not the occupants.

Body Subfloor Superstructure - The module floor sub structure’ consists of side extrusion beams transversely stacked along longitudinal runners' spaced the distance of the chassis frame. This stacking creates a 4 inch high ‘Ladder Frame’ substructure.  Inlaid between the runners is a 'Composite Sub Floor' that includes an expanding foam core with .125" aluminum that is laminated on both sides for added rigidity. This ‘Super Structure’ assembly provides for superior structural strength and protection from side impacts.

All Aluminum Cabinets - All cabinets are ‘Box Pan Formed' .090 aluminum. The cabinets are constructed as independent modular units completely assembled outside the vehicle then secured to the module structure. This unique 'Box Pan Formed' construction is designed to use interior cabinets as a structural enhancement, providing a 'Box-within-a-Box' for superior structural integrity.

Soft Ceiling - The headliner is ½” thick fire retardant foam covered with a heavy grade White vinyl for added insulation and acoustical noise reduction.  This Soft Headliner  provides for added protection and is a unique feature in the industry.

A History of Innovation

We’ve been at the forefront of innovation and strive to stay there. Many of Road Rescues innovations are now standard in the industry. With imitation being the sincerest form of flattery, we often find that our competitors follow our lead.

Patient Centric Design - The Patient Centric concept starts with the patient/cot as the central focus of all interior design decisions. Patient Centric design includes a housing placed along the longitudinal center of the ceiling that provides a work zone with the sole intent of providing easy access to allow the medical personnel to quickly access equipment to administer aid to the patient. Included in the Patient Centric housing is zone lighting for patient head, torso and lower extremities, plasma hangers, secondary switch panel, oxygen outlet and grab bars. The paramedic/EMT can be stationed anywhere around the paitent, while remaining safely buckled in to provide comprehensive medical care.

Biohazard Storage A heavy duty 1-1/2” diameter brushed stainless steel combination Grab Bar/Arm Rest is mounted at the head of the squad bench. This bar is utilized as an entrance grab handle and squad bench arm rest and has the capacity to be pivoted to allow for placing a long board patient on the squad grab bench. Mounted integral to the bar will be a 1-1/4 gallon sharps container and a 3/4 cu. ft. waste container.

Environmental System -The design of the environmental system is to provide optimal air flow and distribution of conditioned air evenly to all areas of the module interior. Dispersion of conditioned air in the module is achieved through (6) 360 degree adjustable swivel air vents located in the module ceiling. The vents are designed to provide even air flow at each vent. In order to support the efficient and effective performance of the system (6) air return vents are mounted low on the ALS cabinet. This return system to allow the existing air in the module to be recirculated back through the heat A/C unit, thus allowing faster cooling or heating of the module environment.

Coved Flooring - A 4 inch high aluminum extrusion is permanently welded to the lower cabinets to allow the flooring to roll up the sidewalls. This extrusion incorporates a radius floor cove to support the flooring material and prevent cracking at the corner. The installation process provides for a recessed 1/2" toe kick area to prevent contamination by fluid borne pathogens, liquids and cleaning solutions.

Insulation Package - The wheelwell and interior compartment wall areas are wrapped with ‘Barymat’ sound proofing material. The interior walls are then insulated with a 1" Polystyrene block foam insulation installed between the extruded structural framing. After the foam is installed, the entire interior is blanketed with 1/4” ‘Low-  E Barrier Foam’ insulation that is foil wrapped on two sides and all seams are taped with silver foil. The underside of the module floor will be insulated with a combination of ¾” high density foam and spray polyurethane insulation. This package provides an enhanced thermal/acoustical insulation package designed to provide an extremely quiet, environmentally efficient patient compartment.

Restocking Featur - The frame of all upper band cabinets are hinged with full length, stainless steel, piano hinges. The frames are hinged on top and are equipped with pneumatic ‘gas shock’ hold opens on each side. This enables the entire face frame to be opened for easier cleaning and restocking of the cabinets. The gas shocks are of sufficient strength to automatically lift the cabinet door frame without any aid and hold in the open position without any other device.  The frame will have a positive locking device to keep the frame from opening while the vehicle is in motion.

Hidden Hinge Exterior Doors - The Module entrance doors and exterior compartment doors are an extruded door design constructed of .125” aluminum skin with the inside corners and the exterior of the door fully welded and ground smooth providing a seamless door. The doors incorporate a bevel on the inside door edge to match the beveled door jamb mating surface. This design provides for a full perimeter weather seal located on the door extrusion itself, thereby fully protecting the rotary latches from the elements and also protecting the weather seal from damage. The design also provides for a hidden hinge and visually imitates automotive doors.  As the frames are positioned around the body, the extrusions increase integrity of the module.

Rubber Impact Rail - The lower exterior body skirts and fender rings are fitted with a Black rubber extrusion impact rail creating the same visual line around the wheel well opening that runs along the lower body.  This material is highly resistant to weather extremes, road salts, and chemicals.  The extruded aluminum rail that accepts the Black extruded rubber rail is isolated from the body with nylon inserts to prevent electrolysis. The rubber impact rail will be a snap-on mount with no fasteners.  Inserted into the extrusion is a replaceable .090” aluminum strip covered with a reflective Scotchlite material that gives a very bright accent stripe. This combination system is designed so that the rubber extrusion absorbs the impact and protects the wheel well area and module from damage. It also enhances the patient and crew safety with the highly visible reflective Scotchlite.
